Sample Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. You'll stay in a hotel or apartment during your stay. Apartments have one or two bedrooms.
Day 2
Attend a meeting at the State Department for Adoption. At this meeting, you will choose a child to visit at the orphanage.
Day 3
Meet with the child you chose at a regional orphanage. You may ask for a second medical opinion about this child.
Day 4
Decide whether or not you will accept the child you visited. If you decide to accept the child, the case will proceed to court. If you decide not to accept the child, you will return to the SDA and be assigned another orphanage to visit. This can lengthen your trip by three to seven days.
Day 5-14
Prepare documents for court.
Day 14-15
Attend the court hearing.
Day 15-24
Wait for the adoption to be finalized so that you can complete the next steps. Sometimes the judge waives this ten day waiting period, and then the adoptive parents will start the next steps immediately. If the waiting period is waived, the parents can take the child within the next five days. If the appeal time is not waived, the parents have two options. They may either choose to stay in Ukraine until they can take the child from the orphanage, or they can leave Ukraine and come back when it is time to take the child to the U.S. Embassy appointment, after which point they may bring him or her home.
Day 24-28
Wait for documents to be prepared after the court hearing. These documents include the child's birth certificate, passport, medical exam, and photo.
Day 29
Depart to Kiev and go to the American Consulate to obtain the child's visa.
Day 30
Depart to the USA.
